Five AI features small businesses actually pay for
Receipt reading, smart search and reply drafting beat chatbots almost every time.
Clients often arrive asking for “an AI chatbot”. After a few questions, it usually turns out they want something more specific, and much more useful. These are the five AI features we’ve seen small businesses value enough to pay for.
1. Reading documents
Receipts, invoices, delivery orders, forms. Turning a photo into structured data saves real hours every week, and it’s easy to measure: you can count how many fields were right. It’s the core of the AI bookkeeping product in our work, and the most reliable AI feature we build.
2. Search that understands what you meant
A customer types “something for a sore back after running” and finds the right physio session. Semantic search over a product catalogue or help centre is quietly one of the highest-return features you can add.
3. Drafting replies
Not auto-replying. Drafting. A staff member gets a suggested reply to a customer enquiry, edits it and sends it. They keep control; the blank-page problem disappears.
4. Summaries of long things
Daily summaries of customer feedback, a one-paragraph brief before a sales call, the three things that changed in a contract. Small, boring and used every day.
5. Answers over your own data
“Why did delivery costs go up last month?” An assistant that answers questions about your own numbers, and shows the records behind each answer, is useful to owners who don’t live in spreadsheets.
What didn’t make the list
General-purpose chatbots on the homepage. In our experience they answer the easy questions customers could find themselves and fumble the hard ones. If you do want one, scope it narrowly and always offer a human.
